Introduction
The hatchetfish's contour is very deep and keel-like. The silver body is marked by a thin dark line on the rear two-thirds of the flanks. Pectoral fins are large and winglike, contrasting with their rudimentary pelvic fins. They have large eyes that are well set forward on a small head, and the mouth is upturned.
Tank Setup
Preferably a longer tank, for more swimming room. As these fish have bodies and fins made for jumping out of the water, a tight-fitting hood is a must. Also, plenty of plants should be provided to allow the fish hiding spots.
Feeding Tips
These fish are carnivores. However they will take a variety of food including flake, bloodworms, small flies, tubifex worms, and mosquito larvae.
Sexual Identification & Breeding
Males are usually slimmer, and smaller than females. It is thought that a lower pH and plenty of floating plants encourage these fish to breed.
